Bookkeeping Qualifications

AAT bookkeeping qualifications provide training for a huge range of bookkeeping roles and are recognised by employers worldwide. They can prepare students to become an AAT bookkeeping member and also open up the opportunity to be your own boss.

We offer five short bookkeeping qualifications, which take from six weeks to six months to complete.

Students can start with any qualification depending on their existing skills and experience. If they already have some accounting experience, they should use AAT Skillcheck to find out which qualification is right for them.

Typical bookkeeper job roles vary according to the level of bookkeeping qualification undertaken – take a look at each qualification to find out more.

Upon completion of the advanced level, you will be eligible to apply for AAT bookkeeping membership.

As an AAT bookkeeping member you’ll gain the designatory letters AATQB and be able to apply for a licence to offer self-employed bookkeeping services.

Key skills you’ll gain at each level:

Access: how to establish key single-entry manual bookkeeping skills.
Foundation: how to execute the principles of double-entry bookkeeping and understand journals, control accounts and a trial balance.
Advanced: how to prepare financial statements for sole traders and partnerships and develop complex spreadsheet software skills.

On Access and Foundation levels you can also choose to learn how to carry out bookkeeping transactions and tasks using accounting software.

AAT Bookkeeping Membership (AATQB)

After completing the Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping, you can apply for professional status. By becoming an AAT bookkeeping member, you can use the designatory letters AATQB after your name to help you stand out to employers.

An AAT bookkeeping member (AATQB) is qualified to provide bookkeeping services to support businesses of all sizes with accurate financial records ensuring that their accounts are up-to-date.

A bookkeeper helps businesses stay in complete control of their finances – they deal with day-to-day finance tasks such as data entry, VAT returns and payroll, and can prepare anything up to trial balance. The types of services typically carried out by a bookkeeper include:

Purchase orders and invoicing
Sales accounting and credit control
Cash and banking admin
Data processing
Payroll accounting
Using data to prepare financial statements
